The British Columbia College of Teachers is the professional regulatory body for educators in B.C.

Due to continued growth at the College we are pleased to announce that a new opportunity has arisen in the Professional Conduct Department for in-house Legal Counsel.

Reporting to the Director, Professional Conduct this is a unique legal role and exceptional opportunity to enjoy challenging work with a hardworking team of passionate professionals.

The successful candidate will:
• Provide the Council & its committees, the Registrar and College staff with legal advice, support and guidance on issues that pertain to the organization.
• Act as College legal counsel in disciplinary and fitness matters, including acting as College legal counsel in hearings.
• Draft Consensual Resolution Agreements.
• Act as an advisor to the Council and College staff on issues concerning procedural and substantive issues relating to the College.
• Research and prepare legal opinions on legal problems and issues arising from specific cases, and on the implications for and obligations of the College under a variety of provincial and federal statutes.
• Review the legal implications of existing policies and legislation, assist the College in the formulation of policy and bylaws, and recommend amendments in response to new or emerging issues.
• Remain current on industry issues, including monitoring other regulatory jurisdictions.
• Act as a liaison with external counsel.
• Acts as Director of Professional Conduct, in the Director’s absence.
• Act as a legal resource for the HR department for employment issues including the interpretation of legislation and employment law in respect to employment contracts and personnel policies.
• Assist in the establishment or determination of appropriate standards and practices and review of all College policies, procedures and documents to ensure compliance with such standards

The ideal candidate possesses
• At least 5 years experience as a practicing lawyer, with experience in administrative law.
• A law degree from a recognized university.
• Current member in good standing with the Law Society of B.C.
• Strong communication, writing and drafting skills
• Motivation, aptitude as a self-starter, the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong work ethic with a willingness to multi-task and be flexible to take on varied responsibilities.
• Ability to exercise tact and discretion and be entrusted with confidential information
• Ability to work under pressure with time constraints, manage time and workload effectively in an environment of frequently changing priorities
• Good judgment to proactively and independently solve problems and make decisions.
• The ability to communicate and interact effectively with external legal counsel and internal staff in a way that encourages collaboration and knowledge-sharing.
• An ability to view legal matters from a College perspective.
• Regulatory experience which would be an asset.
• Experience with volunteer/elected boards which would be preferred.
